Did Discount Tire Just Snooker Me?

If the lug nuts are never subjected to the use of an impact wrench there will never be an issue with the stainless caps on the steel lug nuts. It is the impact action of the wrench that deforms the caps on the lug nuts and is why I swap my own tires for rotations and when I need tires I will remove from the car and put in my truck to take to tire store to get new tires. I bought some all steel black lug nuts for my car but even with just a socket and breaker bar the black coating began to rust from the wear from the socket after a few rotations so just put the factory lugs back on and have yet to have any caps swell from just using a socket and breaker bar/torque wrench.

I realize not all have a truck or tools/ability to rotate/remove wheel on their own, so a quality set of lug nuts is very useful.

Sorry you were not informed of the issue before you were given the bill and paying for the tires, they should have informed you prior to any installation of parts when they discovered the issue.

Its good you did not get charged full price, but it was poor business practice for them not to inform you of the issue to allow you to make the decision yourself. I was an auto tech for 40+ years and never performed any unauthorized repairs that I found while working on a vehicle without contacting customer first for approval.

Its not the way to keep loyal customers.
