Good Performance Without Too Much Noise?

Between my 15 and 17 Ecoboost Mustangs I have tried cat back with race mufflers, cat back with 14" oval street mufflers, axle back with race mufflers and axle back with 14" oval street mufflers. None of them made enough difference in power to be noticeable compared to stock.

From a sound perspective the 14" street mufflers in an axel back configuration with the stock resonator is just as quiet as stock. The 14" street mufflers in a cat back configuration was still pretty quiet but had a nice idle tone and sounded good at WOT and was as quiet as stock cruising. This is the configuration l wound up with on my 15. On the 17 I put on 10" race mufflers in a cat back configuration (no resonator). This sounded real good at idle and was loud at WOT but not so much that it attracted unwanted attention. At cruise is where it fell down. It was a little loud but very tolerable but the slightest increase in throttle it got real loud and for a daily driver it was not acceptable. I put the stock resonator back in with the 10" race mufflers. This is perfect for me, a nice performance sounding idle, it speaks up at WOT but stays as quiet as stock during cruising.

FWIW, I got an early Christmas present from my wife, a MBRP cat back exhaust for my 2.3 Ecoboost Ranger. This is a 3" system from the connection to the down pipe all the way to the tip at the back of the truck.

Just like all the exhaust mods I made to the Ecoboost Mustangs there is not enough power difference to be noticeable to the butt dyno.

The exhaust did exactly what I wanted in the way of sound and I am very happy and won't be doing any more exhaust experiments on the Ranger.

The stock exhaust was so quiet that standing next to the tail pipe with the engine idling the only sound you can hear are the mechanical noises from the engine compartment. Even at WOT acceleration the engine noises drowned out any sound from the exhaust. The MBRP gives you a nice sound at idle that is not at all loud. Cruising the exhaust is there but you can barely hear it and there is ZERO drone. Accelerating you get a nice deep roar but is not so loud to make anyone outside the truck notice, in other words it's perfect for a daily driver.
