I have been driving manuals for 50 years, every one of them have been stiffer shifting and/or notchy when they are cold. Even the last three pickups i have had with computer controlled automatic transmissions don't shift into the over drive gears until they are warmed up.

With that being said my 15 Ecoboost Mustang was quite notchy shifting 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd when cold. Changing the fluid to Royal Purple Syncromax made a very noticeable improvement and was smooth when warm. My 17 Ecoboost Mustang is dramatically better there is almost no notchiness when cold and when warm it is silky smooth.
