Bov: Tial Q
Vacuum reading via Turbosmart adapter from PCV connection
Bov location: Hot side
What spring?
Tial Q spring size chart says that you choose spring based on idle vacuum. Ecoboost produces ~500mmHg vacuum at idle. If my conversion is correct, that is ~19-20inHg. Looking at Tial spring charts, Yellow or Plain should work. If you go through this FUll Race FMIC TiAL BOV installed I read out that 7 psi spring (Black) is correct. On americanmuscle.com they used to sell Tial bov with 8 psi spring (White).
Should Bov be closed or open?
One forums states one thing other states another thing. Fact should be that vacuum pulls bov open. By that logic If engine produces ~19-20inHg in idle and you have a Black spring what is rated ~8-13 inHg. Vacuum in idle should be enough to pull Bov fully open. If Black spring is correct, then by that logic bov should be open at idle. if now other "expert" states that bov should befully closed at idle means that Black spring is too weak and should be replaced with Yellow or Brown. Either way, the moment you press gas pedal vacuum decreases. Means the spring pushes bov closed.
If you use weaker spring than intended...
By logic weaker spring opens bov sooner, because it requires less vacuum to open.
If you use stronger spring that intended...
Then by logic with stronger spring the bov stays closed longer. Because while 10inHg black already open, the yellow stays closed until vacuum drops to 20inHg.
On paper...
You'd want bov to be closed as soon as you hit the gas. If you have a stronger spring, your valve will already closed before you hit gas. But you also want it to open as soon as you let go gas. Means the weaker (Black) would open sooner.
So how do you know what spring to choose?
